Latest newsletter for Term4 Room 18 Newsletter 2010- Latest newsletter for Term 3 Room 18 Newsletter 2010

Welcome to Room 18!!!!
My name is Rick de Kock and I will be sharing Room 18 with Marcus Broughton this year. Marcus will be taking the class for Music, Art, Maori and strand Maths, every Tuesday.
We start a very busy term with ‘getting to know each other’. We then start to set term and year goals. We also start to look at camp goals and group work. Routines and expectations will be set alongside these goals.

Discipline, respect, good manners and hard work
are always encouraged in Room 18. We have a system whereby the pupils take responsibility for their own learning. Pupils are given different responsibilities throughout the year to reinforce this system. The school’s VIRTUES programme is always a huge focus in Room 18.
We will be having our first parent-teacher interview in week 7, and it is here that I hope to learn more about your children from the parents, and answer any queries that you may have.
Term 1 - Outline
• Our Concept for the term is Community. This will be integrated into all learning areas.
• Library is on Mondays and Art on Tuesdays.
• We have our Syndicate Assembly on Friday afternoons at 1:30pm, followed by Syndicate Sport.
• All children are expected to participate in all school activities, unless a note is sent from home.

Please speak to your kids about the difference between ‘cannot’ and ‘will not’.
• Oral language, reading, maths, topic work, spelling and writing is done daily
Homework

  • Pupils MAY receive homework on Mondays and will then be expected to complete it by Friday morning.
  • I do NOT give lots of homework, as I realise the pressures that it may cause in some homes. It also takes away family time, where what the pupils did at school can be discussed and reinforced, if necessary.
  • I plan to email the pupils homework occasionally and pupils can then do their homework on computer and email it back to school. (Please supply email address and return to me ASAP)
  • The homework sheet may consist of a variety of Maths, Reading, Language and Topic on current work and revision of others.
  • Projects may, on occasion, replace homework sheets.

===Reading:

=

The pupils will be allowed to take out 2 school library books per week. They will be issued with a reading log and required to read 1 book per week. They must be encouraged to read for at least a half an hour per night. The best time is just before lights out. So much of the child’s literacy depends on their ability to read so please be quite strict on their reading at home. It is always useful to get them to tell you what they had just read and get some discussion going.

Television:
This area is totally up to you although I would ask that they include the news into their daily television dosage. There are also some awesome television channels such as, Discovery, Animal Planet, Channel, etc
